A New Anti-Inflammatory Oil Worth Paying Attention To

When you’re dealing with food sensitivities or trying to manage inflammation, oils matter. It touches almost everything you eat. Swapping out seed oils is often one of the first changes people make but the question becomes: What should I be using instead?
Olive oil and avocado oil are already in regular rotation for me but I recently came across something new on social media—algae oil. I did a little testing and I think it's worth a try!
What Is Algae Oil?
Algae oil is exactly what it sounds like—oil derived from algae. It’s still relatively new to the consumer market, but it's been used in supplements and food science for years because of its high content of omega-3s, the kind of fat your body actually wants more of.
Most cooking oils are high in omega-6 fatty acids, which aren’t inherently bad but can throw off your balance when they’re over-consumed (which they often are). Algae oil is different. It’s rich in omega-9 and also has a better omega-6 to omega-3 ratio than most plant-based oils, which makes it a strong option for people trying to lower systemic inflammation.
Why It’s a Big Deal
For people with autoimmune issues, chronic inflammation, or food-related flares, the type of fat you cook with can make a noticeable difference in how you feel. It's not the sole culprit but over time, contributes to the negative impacts.
Algae oil gives you a neutral-tasting, high smoke point option that your body is less likely to react to. The only negative? It's pricy. But hopefully that will change over time.
What It’s Like to Cook With
I tried using algae oil for sautéing vegetables and for a light homemade dressing. The flavor is extremely mild—more neutral than avocado oil and definitely less assertive than olive oil. It has a high smoke point (around 485°F), which makes it great for high-heat cooking or roasting.
Any Downsides?
The biggest one right now is availability and cost. You probably won’t find it at every grocery store just yet, and the price is higher than your average cooking oil. But if you’re looking for variety or trying to cut down on omega-6s without sacrificing flexibility in the kitchen, it’s worth trying out when you can find it.
If you’ve tried algae oil, let me know what you think. And if you’re still figuring out your go-to cooking oils, this might be one to keep on your radar.

Hi Lyn, thanks for sharing this, really interesting stuff! I hadn’t heard much about algae oil before, but your breakdown makes a lot of sense, especially the omega-6 to omega-3 balance and the high smoke point for cooking. I’m always on the lookout for healthier oil options, so I’ll definitely keep algae oil on my radar. Appreciate you testing it out and sharing your experience. Do you have a favorite brand or place where you usually find it?
This was such a refreshing read—thanks for spotlighting algae oil! I’m always looking for clean, anti-inflammatory options, and I hadn’t considered how dramatically omega ratios could shift just by switching cooking oils. Love that it has a high smoke point too—makes it way more versatile than I expected. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for it (hopefully prices drop soon). Appreciate the honest breakdown!
You have a very unique subject in your blog. Congratulations! As it is very informative and interesting. Check this link out for the price of Algae oil. Very high price for the quantity.

I will definitely need to check it out! I have seen advertising for Algae Oil and I couldn't tell if I believed the hype. Beyond the purported health benefits, I do like the idea of a high heat alternative instead of using canola oil, which is what I primarily use for frying. Thanks for the tip!
