Not All Plant Milks Are Created Equal

When I first gave up dairy, plant-based milk felt like the obvious upgrade. I swapped cow’s milk for oat milk, almond milk, cashew milk or whatever was trendy or looked clean-ish. I figured as long as it didn’t have lactose, I was doing my body a favor.

But after a while, I started to notice that a lot of plant-based milks had long ingredient lists and additives that didn’t seem healthy. Once I switched to options with fewer, simpler ingredients, I noticed a real difference in how I felt.

The Sneaky Stuff in “Clean” Plant Milk

A lot of plant milks are marketed as healthy, but the ingredient lists say otherwise. Even the ones with the pretty minimalist packaging often sneak in stuff like gums, natural flavors or oils—especially sunflower oil. That one surprised me the most. It shows up in so many brands I used to buy all the time.

And for people with autoimmune issues or food sensitivities, that’s not nothing. Sunflower oil is high in omega-6s, which can throw off the balance in your body and cause more inflammation if you’re already sensitive.

What I Use Now

I still drink almond and cashew milk. I just try to stick to the ones with short ingredient lists. Brands like Three Trees or MALK are good options bust most of the time, I make my own using my nut milk maker. Read more about that here: Why My Nut Milk Maker Was Actually Worth It

I’m not trying to DIY everything in my life but this one was worth it. The texture is better, it tastes fresher, and I know exactly what’s in it. I can also tweak the consistency depending on what I’m using it for—thinner for cereal, creamier for coffee.

This isn’t about being obsessive. But if you’ve made the switch to plant milk, it might be worth checking the label. Some of these extra ingredients can sneak in and work against you without you even realizing.

I’ve been an almond milk fan for years and totally agree, simpler ingredients make a big difference. I’ve noticed some brands even add sweeteners or gums when they label it as “unsweetened.” Have you noticed a difference in how homemade nut milk froths or behaves in coffee compared to store-bought?

Sunflower oil is in soo much! I've been drinking almond milk for a while now, but just recently heard about the brand MALK. I'm excited to try it out on my next grocery run.
