Proper Hotels is Ditching Seed Oils Across All Locations

Proper Hotels just announced a few days ago that they’re removing seed oils from all of their properties. And if you have food sensitivities or autoimmune issues, that’s news that could impact the way you travel.

Why It Matters

For a lot of people, avoiding seed oils is one of the first changes they make when trying to reduce inflammation or support gut health. But once you start looking for them, you realize they’re everywhere—canola oil in salad dressings, soybean oil in roasted vegetables, sunflower oil in “clean” snacks.

And when you’re eating out? Forget it. Unless you’re at a place that explicitly lists its oils, you’re probably getting a dose of something that doesn’t sit well. Even when an item is described as cooked in olive oil, it is usually a blend of oils. That’s why Proper’s decision to remove seed oils from its kitchens is actually a big deal.

What They’re Doing

Proper Hotels is phasing out industrial seed oils like canola, sunflower, soybean, and corn oil and replacing them with alternatives like extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, and animal fats, depending on the dish. This change will apply to all of their hotels, which include locations in Santa Monica, Austin, San Francisco, and more.

It’s rare to see a hotel group take this kind of proactive step, especially at scale. It shows that someone’s thinking beyond just flavor or cost. They’re considering how people feel after the meal too. It also shows that there is a growing demand for meals cooked without seed oils, which is exciting for the future.

Final Thoughts

Is a seed oil swap going to fix everything? No. But if you’ve been working to feel better by changing what you eat, you already know that these little things add up. Hopefully more hotels and restaurants start following suit. But in the meantime, if you’re traveling and want to stay somewhere that could help you feel just a little bit better, Proper might be worth looking into.
