What I Actually Order at Fast Casual Restaurants

When you have food restrictions, one thing that can be challenging is finding options you can eat spontaneously. “Fast casual” doesn’t always feel so fast. You’re stuck wondering if something is cooked in butter or tossed in a sauce that will leave you itchy or inflamed.
But over time and after looking through many allergen menus, I’ve figured out what works for me at a few of the bigger chains. These meals aren’t perfect but they’re dependable. I know how they’ll make me feel, which means I can actually enjoy the meal and move on with my day.
Here’s what I usually get:
Chipotle

My go-to order:
Salad base (no dressing)
Chicken or barbacoa
Fajita veggies
Guacamole
I skip the cheese, sour cream, beans and corn, and I avoid the vinaigrette because of the seed oils. The guac adds creaminess and flavor and the salsa gives enough punch that I don’t feel like I’m missing anything. It’s filling, satisfying, and doesn’t make me feel gross after.
Cava

My go-to order:
Greens and brown rice base
Grilled chicken or harissa honey chicken
Hummus
Tomato and cucumber salad
Pickled onions
Lemon herb tahini
I usually skip the crunchy toppings and any sauces I’m unsure about. The tahini adds richness without dairy and I’ve found the dips to be a safe way to boost flavor. It’s one of the few places where I can get something colorful, fresh and full of texture without needing a bunch of modifications.
Sweetgreen

My go-to order:
Custom salad with spring mix
Roasted sweet potatoes
Blackened chicken or tofu
Cucumbers and tomatoes
Avocado
Olive oil and lemon juice as dressing
Most of the dressings contain seed oils so I keep it simple. If I’m extra hungry, I’ll add rice or roasted veggies. I like that I can build something that feels hearty but still light enough that I don’t crash afterward.
These spots aren’t allergen-proof but they’re relatively flexible. Once you find your base order, it takes the decision fatigue out of eating out and that alone is worth a lot.

This is so helpful, I totally relate to that decision fatigue when trying to eat out with food restrictions. I love how you’ve found solid go-to meals at each place, I have the same favorites at Chipotle actually!
Love this post — totally agree that fast casual doesn’t always mean fast or casual when you have food sensitivities. I appreciate how specific your go-to orders are — especially skipping seed oils, which a lot of people don’t think about. I haven’t tried customizing Sweetgreen like that, but that blackened chicken + lemon juice combo sounds clean and energizing. Definitely going to try your Cava lineup next time. Have you found any safe options at places like Mendocino Farms or Tender Greens?
Thanks for sharing these — super helpful for anyone trying to eat clean without overthinking every bite.

I recently had Cava for the first time and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality! It definitely had great flavors and texture and was something different. I will have to try your recommendation.
